A Quick Summer Getaway to Gdańsk, Poland

This summer, I decided to take a quick escape from Aberdeen and explore a hidden gem in Eastern Europe Gdańsk, Poland. Thanks to an affordable direct Wizz Air flight, it was an easy and budget-friendly weekend trip that turned out to be the perfect summer break.

Getting There

Getting to Gdańsk couldn’t have been easier. I found a cheap direct flight from Aberdeen to Gdańsk with Wizz Air, which made the trip ideal for a spontaneous weekend getaway. In just a few hours, I went from Scotland’s granite skies to the sunny Baltic coast.

First Impressions

Gdańsk instantly impressed me with its colourful old town, friendly locals, and relaxed atmosphere. The city feels historic yet modern full of life, but not overcrowded. Everything from the pastel façades to the cobblestone streets adds to its charm.

Getting Around

Transportation in Gdańsk is easy, efficient, and affordable. From the airport, you can reach the city centre quickly by taxi, uber, bus or train. Once you’re there, most attractions are walkable, and the tram system is reliable if you want to explore further.

Food & Drink

One of the biggest highlights for me was the food. I treated myself to a massive tomahawk steak that was perfectly cooked and surprisingly affordable compared to UK prices.

And if you enjoy a good beer, you’ll be happy to know that beer in Poland is incredibly cheap. You can enjoy a cold pint by the river without feeling guilty about your budget.

Gdańsk also has a great mix of traditional Polish dishes and modern restaurants, so whether you want comfort food or something fancy, you’ll find plenty of options.

River Cruise

I also took a river cruise along the Motława River, which was a great way to see the city from a different angle. The cruise passes by the historic port area, old warehouses, and the famous Gdańsk Crane giving you a glimpse into the city’s maritime history while you relax on deck.

Affordable & Worth It

Everything in Gdańsk felt good value for money transport, food, attractions, even accommodation. You can easily have a full weekend getaway here for a fraction of what you’d spend in Western Europe.

Final Thoughts

My two days in Gdańsk were short but unforgettable. Between the easy travel, great food, cheap beer, and laid-back vibe, it’s a destination I’d definitely recommend especially for anyone in the UK looking for a quick and affordable European escape.
